Traveling Vest Virginia
Best of Traveling WV 2009

Many great folks and thousands of miles went in to Traveling WV in 2009.

EYEWITNESS ONLINE WEBCAST VIDEO

As 2009 draws to a close, and the curtain falls on my 12th year of Traveling West Virginia, I'm reminded of the folks I've had the privilege of meeting and getting to know through the years. Some I may never see or hear from again, others have become genuine friends, for all of you I'm grateful.

People and experiences shape all of us, and I'm no different. Many individuals have played a part in making me the person I am, but few influenced me more than my grandfather who passed away in April of this year at the age of 94. He was born in 1914 in Webster County, I was born in 1964. Fifty years of life separated us...I never felt it. He instilled in me a love and pride in West Virginia and its people that I'll carry forever. "Buck" wasn't complicated, he was simply a good man who loved God, his family, and the state he called "the most beautiful", what a privilege it was to be his grandson, I miss him dearly.

As I travel around our state, my thoughts always drift back to days spent fishing, hunting, camping, or simply riding down countless country roads in his old Willys Jeep, neither of us knowing what lay around the next turn. It's with that same spirit that I try to gather stories from around the Mountain State, discovering places and letting people tell their stories. I'm so grateful for everyone who's been featured, and for the viewers who have made Traveling West Virginia a weekly ritual, it has been and continues to be a great ride. Hopefully you'll enjoy this look back at 2009, as I dedicate Traveling West Virginia 2010 to the life and memory of Forest G. Shamblin, my granddaddy Buck, I'll see you down the road.
