Arnout 'Sonny' Hyde, Jr.

West Virginians are mourning the passing of the man who captured the majesty of the Mountain State through the lens. Photojournalist Brad Rice sits down with friends and colleagues of Arnout Hyde.

Arnout Hyde, Jr. served as photographer for Wonderful West Virginia, a publication of the Division of Natural Resources, from 1968 until 1982, when he was named editor. He served as editor until retiring in 1988. He then came out of retirement in 1997 to again serve as editor under contract with his company, Cannon Graphics, which produces the magazine for the DNR.

Hyde also produced five coffee-table pictorial books, several calendars and a series of note cards containing his photographs. His photos ranged from landscapes to human interest and appeared in National Geographic, Life, Reader's Digest and National Wildlife.

He received the Distinguished West Virginian Award from three different governors.
