If you ever thought about picking up a gun and trying your aim at skeet shooting, the time to give it a shot is now.

Ashley Thompson Tomasek is a professional when it comes to skeet shooting.

"Growing up in the Thompson family you grew up shooting from the time you were born,” Tomasek said. “I got my first gun when I was born and it kind of blossomed from there."

She has been shooting and hitting clay pigeons for more than 20 years. When we caught up with her at the Putnam County Gun Club; she only missed once.

"It's still a rush to be able to do something as good as I used to be able to do it,” Tomasek said.

"When I was little especially we were at the range almost every day sometimes," Tomasek said. "I shot on a shooting team when I was little, so we would practice at least four days a week. But it does take practice. It's not something you're just going to come out and one day be able to do it."

That’s why practice, and patience are key. Tomasek said it is important to be fitted with the right equipment, including the right size gun, safety glasses and ear protection. It’s also important to know how your gun shoots and where you should aim on the range.

"You want to wait for it to come through your line of sight and then get the gun right in front of it and pull the trigger,” Tomasek said.

According to the expert, your stance is also important.

"Make sure it's up on your shoulder and you want to be to the side a little bit," Tomasek said.

Do not expect to hit every clay pigeon, because practice is key.

"I love skeet shooting because to me it was always challenging because anybody can shoot a target,” Tomasek said. “But skeet shooting, it does take practice."

What Tomasek enjoys the most about the sport is being able to be outdoors and spend time with her family; not to mention being able to out-shoot some of the guys.

"Growing up it was interesting sometimes, but I could always prove that I could beat them any day of the week," Tomasek said.
