Fly Fishing 101
Patrick McMurtry The Basics Of Fly Fishing

"It's a thrill, much different that a spinning rod"
Charlie Krepp's devoted much of his life to fly fishing and he can do it all over the state.
Some of the best entrainment bang for the buck comes when the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources puts money in the budget to raise and stock trout. Many of these bad boys wind up in some of the smaller, more beautiful streams in the state, and others go into waters more well known for their fly fishing. If you haven't tried it, the Kanawha Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited makes it easy for you to learn by putting on classes during the year.

"We start at the equipment and go from the handle all the way to the fly and tell them how it goes together and how it functions. Then we take them to the gym and show them how to use it." says Krepps.

It doesn't take a long time for these newbies to get the hang of casting a fly-it's not tough, although there are some tips these pro's pass along to their students.

"Anybody can do it, anybody can learn it, it's not difficult to learn. It's a matter of practice, rhythm, coordination and knowing your equipment and how to use it." says Krepps.

After a few sessions...and a few lines in the rafters above...most get the hang of it enough to get out on a stream and put their new found talent to work. And just to make sure they don't get discouraged, Charlie says he's always glad to get out and help out.

"We like to get them out on a stream to fish if at all possible. Come warmer weather, we contact them, take them to our stockings and fish with them afterward. I fish with all that I can. It's not a difficult sport at all." says Krepps.

In fact, chances are, once you spend a few weekends with a fly rod in your hand, the sport will become a passion. Once that happens, Charlie and his buddies at Trout Unlimited consider their class to be a major success.
