Whether it's calling in a turkey, sitting in a stand waiting for a buck, or taking your dog out looking for birds, it's not hard to convince a hunter to hit the woods. But getting a non-hunter into the sport can be challenging. Karen Lee, with The National Wild Turkey Federation, spent the first half of her life with absolutely no interest in hunting, but that all changed one day when a co-worker started talking about her experiences.

"She wanted to spend time with her husband, she enjoyed wildlife, those were the things I enjoyed. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and it was really the first time I heard something other than just killing an animal. My personal journey really skyrocketed when I started working with the Wild Turkey Federation. I did not hunt until I started working here, I'm working for a hunting organization and never picked up a gun in my life." say Lee.

Now Karen loves to hunt and she makes a living by helping promote the sport. If you have someone you'd like to get interested in hunting, someone who hasn't quite gotten the bug yet, Karen has some tips for you.

"I think with anything, when you're trying to talk to someone about a new concept, you should really approach it with honesty. This is why it brings joy to me, why do I love getting outside? It can be anything from I enjoy putting meat on the table for my family to I like the challenge and adventure of it." says Lee.

If you don't try to exaggerate, try to keep it real, Karen says the person you're talking too will relate, not rebel. If you think about it, getting outdoors really sells itself, and hunting is just an added bonus. Nothing, she says, can beat honesty and personal experience.

"Just getting out in the field and experiencing the hunt myself, each hunt is different, each hunt added or took away from my opinion of hunting and just over the course of 15 years, I am where I am today." says Lee.

Today, Karen is an avid outdoors woman and a leading outdoor communicator in the country.
