Thousands of bucks are taken every year in West Virginia, and while each and every one is something to be proud of, a very select few are big enough to receive a big honor, recognition by the Boone and Crockett Club of North America.

Jack Reneau, of the Boone and Crockett Club says it's a big deal for hunters. "It's usually a once in a lifetime deal for most people. You go out hoping to get a nice deer, and most people don't even know there's a Boone and Crockett deer in the neighborhood, and they get one. They worked hard, made it-you got one."

These are the biggest of the big bucks, but Boone and Crockett also keeps records and sets standards for all big game in North America. Gene Thornton is a biologist with The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources who loves hunting, he's been doing it all his life. You browse through the pages of the Boone and Crockett records and you won't find his name, but there....that's his wife...proud owner of a Boone and Crockett caribou entry. To get an entry you have to have a certified measure, and these folks are getting training to do just that.

"We have measurers who are Boone and Crockett certified in the state, but with a rash of retirement the last few years, we needed some new measures. We hosted a Boone Crockett workshop in the '70's in the state, but there hasn't been one since. twelve of our DNR people are being trained and will be certified measurers."

That's good news for folks who hunt bear and deer here, or elk, moose, sheep and other big game across North America. It's good recognition and good information.

"The Boone and Crockett Club keeps records of North America big game and we are not keeping it for ego purposes, we are keeping it for conservation success stories because there was a time in our lifetimes that deer weren't real common. Wildlife managers have brought wildlife back from the edge of extinction." says Reneau.

You don't have to go far in the woods of West Virginia to see evidence of that success.
