![]() Traditional Rifles
Dave Walker loves taking a few steps back in history and taking his flintlock out whenever he gets a chance. This isn't just a gun, it's a legacy. Dave Walker/Traditionalist says: "Most of these rifles are a piece of history. These are all hand crafted, mostly here in WV. We have a lot of gun makers here in WV that will go out and cut trees down, they'll let the wood dry and season real good and then they'll cut the blanks out and put the rifles together themselves." With these guns, you pretty much do everything yourself. There is not bullet cartridges, this is round ball, black powder and a piece of rock. Dave Walker/Traditionalist says: "This is the flint lock rifle. The reason they call it a flint is because this is the flint here and that's what ignites the gun powder in the barrel. This is about a 40 cal.. They get pretty big, you'll see a lot of them, they start out at 32 and go up to 62. This one here's a 40, this one's a 54 cal.." Everything about flint locks is fun, but things get real interesting when the spark hits the powder. Patrick McMurtry/Eyewitness News says: "I started with this 45, it really was a nice firing gun, but now I'm gonna break out the 54, it's big and a lot heavier-pretty much the same deal. That's pretty good shooting." And a lot of fun. If you get a chance, get a little black powder experience this season. Muzzle loader season opens December 14th and runs through the 19th. Have fun, be safe and good luck. For West Virginia Wildlife, I'm Patrick McMurtry, Eyewitness News.
