It's been a great five years of buck hunting for me and my son Quinn. Well, maybe better for me than him, because he's spent a lot of time in the woods without getting too many shots.
To be fair, it's tough to hunt deer with a video camera whirring in the background. We got pretty close a couple of years ago, you can hear the doe coming in-the buck wasn't far behind. A second after the camera goes on, the deer take off.
This year, we get into the woods optimistic.

Quinn goes up in the tree stand-I have a bum leg, so I can't do too much this year.
A couple of hours later and Quinn sees a doe take off and he gets a clear shot. I don't.

"Did you get him dad?

"I never had a real good shot at it."

We know Quinn had a shot.

"You got him good."

"I lost it down in the hollow."

For the first time, Quinn and I were on the trail of a deer he shot. I was proud and Quinn was hopeful. We find the doe.

"All right, you first one, man."

It wasn't a trophy buck, but it was a successful day in the woods and that's enough to keep my son interested in coming back with me next year. A family tradition continues. For West Virginia Wildlife, I'm Patrick McMurtry. Be safe this year and Happy Thanksgiving.
