Late Season Hunting

Don't store your shotgun just yet, there's plenty of hunting still available

Deer season is over,gobbler season is still a couple months away, what's a hunter to do? What about small game hunting... There are still plenty of opporunities.

Jerry Duffield/DNR says:
"At t his time of year, there's not a lot to do around the house. It's too cold to get outside in the yard, it's a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the woods.

We still have rabbit hunting and grouse, we still have trapping and we have a lot of predator calling. That is a new sport coming on and we have that still to go yet."

Rabbit and grouse hunting is a totally different ball game than traditional deer or turkey hunting. It's great for kids because you can spend the day with them without once having to tell them to be still or quiet down.

Jerry Duffield/DNR says:
Very different. You move a lot, you don't have to be still, you can talk a lot with your buddies, just all together different than deer hunting.

You also don't have to track your animals-your dogs do that for you.

But you need to know what kind of dog to take with you.

Jerry Duffield/DNR says:
"Beagles are the dogs for rabbits and you have pointers and setters for birds. You need to talk to someone who already has a dog and get the information from them.

"A rabbit stays in a briar patch and you don't want to get briars in you, so you send the dog in and that's a lot easier to send the dog in."

Of course, your dog has to be willing-that's why they call them man's best friend. If you have a nice afternoon ahead, get your kids or best buds in the truck, go out in the woods and have a great time. For west virginia wildlife, i'm patrick mcmurtry, eyewitness news.
