After a great year of eating well and hanging out, the big bucks are on the move and starting to get restless. That must mean it's time for deer firearm season.

Lets face it, last year provided great mast conditions. That translated into healthy deer who didn't have too hard of a winter. Now those factors will show up in the form of bigger deer, many with massive racks. It's trophy time!

Even if you're not necessarily looking for a trophy buck, you could be in luck. Several counties are also running concurrent antlerless seasons-make sure you check your regs and have your proper stamps. With the gun season starting the 19th, you have to have your extra buck stamps by sunday the 18th. You can get them online, but you have to do that before monday.

Last year was a special time for me. My son quinn went deer hunting for the first time, and now he's hooked. That's what i've been waiting for-now i have a hunting buddy for life. We didn't set any records last year, we're optimistic this year, though. Even if we don't get a trophy, i'll treasure the time we spend together in the beautiful woods of west virginia and that's the best part of hunting. You can be we'll be out there again on opening day.

If you're going out in the woods, please remember all the safety rules you've learned through the hunters education classes or from experience. Use a harness if you climb up in a tree stand, and make sure you wear plenty of blaze orange.

Have fun, good luck and be patient. This looks like it could be a banner year for deer hunters! For west virginia wildlife, i'm patrick mcmurtry, see you in the woods.
