Paul Johanson/DNR Deer Biologist says:
"I think overall, numbers will be up in size in terms of antler development, should be slightly higher than last year, a little bit larger, we're expecting the deer to be in very good condition this year."

If you want to know anything about deer in West Virginia, Paul Johanson's your man. This year he has good news for all of us who can't wait to grab our rifles and head out into the woods. The big bucks are out there in bigger numbers.

Paul Johanson/DNR Deer Biologist says:
"We're expecting a great deer season again this year. Overall, compared to last year, we expect the overall harvest to be down, we had 135,000 animals last year. Across the various deer seasons, the buck kill will be up a little bit, we are expecting our antlerless, bow and muzzle loader to be down a little bit, but i think we are going to see a fine deer season."

A big part of Paul's job at the DNR is to manage the deer population so hunters will find consistent numbers of deer in the woods every year. Sometimes that means expanding the antlerless season-sometimes they shorten it to increase the population for hunters next year. That's why it's so important for everyone to check their local regulations before they go hunting.

Paul Johanson/DNR Deer Biologist says:
"We set our antlerless deer season every year, we look at our best available data, the most recent information, then we make our reccomendation to the commission and we change those seasons year by year. This year's antlerless season will be more conservative than it was last year. We'll still have 45 counties or portions open for anlterless hunting but hunters need to look at the regulations."

Remember to be safe, wear your orange and check your regs and this should be a banner year for deer hunters.
