"I don't think people have any idea hungry people there are, disadvantaged people there are." There are thousands of people who need a little extra help this time of year. Many can't work because of the weather, others are working but can't make ends meet. They have families to feed, but can't. Can't without your help. That's where you come in. Father Olof Scott says: "This program, which is called Share the Harvest Sunday, is available for all churches of all denominations, and for all the religous groups, syangogues, Islamic centers in the state to take a Sunday between now and the end of the year to take up a collection and help support their program." The money raised from Share the Harvest Sunday goes to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. A lot of folks are lucky enough to harvest more deer than they can eat, or want to keep. You can help out by donating any extra deer you get this year to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. They'll put that extra meat on the tables of folks who really need the help just to feed their families. It also keeps places like Manna Meals up and running. Sandy Perrine/Manna Meal says: "It comes in this size package, two pounds, and it's what we use to make chili, spaghetti, soup, whatever in that pot, we use 36 of these just for 1 lunch." When you think about it, Hunters Helping the Hungry really is the best of both worlds. Hunters get to go out in the woods knowing if they do get some extra deer, they'll be feeding their friends and neighbors. You see, the people needing this help could live right next door or go to your church. That's continuing a Mountain State tradition that goes back to the pioneer days. Father Olof Scott says: "In years past, you're right, neighbors took care of neighbors, we knew who our neighbors were and this program allows us to get back into that spirit of neighborliness." And the spirit of giving that comes this holiday season means so much more when you're literally helping West Virginian's survive the winter. Sandy Perrine/Manna Meal says: "It saves us money-it's very important." LEARN MORE W. Va.
