Kevin Yokum/DNR Biologist says: "We took vast data on the fish and said a 5 lb largemouth bass should be about 21 inches statewide. Any angler catching a fish that length or longer will qualify for our trophy fish citation program. That's the biggest change we've made." If you catch a fish that big, you'll get one of these trophy fish awards. All it will cost you is five bucks. You'll get something to frame in case you don't want something to mount. Kevin Yokum/DNR Biologist says: "Previously, in order to qualify for the citation program, you had to have a fish weighed on certified scales. That meant taking the fish out of the water, off the water to the nearest store or tackle shop, often meaning the harvesting of that fish. Certainly there's a place for that, but a lot of anglers really didn't want to harvest that fish." And many other's legally couldn't harvest the fish if it was caught in a catch and release area. Now anglers fishing those waters can have their trophy catch certified. Kevin Yokum/DNR Biologist says: "Previously, just about anyone fishing a catch and release area couldn't take their fish and get them weighed on a certified scale, it virtually eliminated all our prime water in catch and release area from getting any type of citiations"
Kevin Yokum/DNR Biologist says:"It's kinda the best of both worlds-catch the fish and still obtain the citation, release the fish back into the water for years of enjoyment." And that's what it's all about....Enjoying the outdoors. LINKS TO LEARN MORE W. Va.
