![]() DRAGONFLIES
"They can fly backwards, they can fly up to speeds of 25 miles per hour, they're just very agile flyers to catch prey out of the air, they take turns and can fly backwards and the way they set up their territories and scare other dragonflies away." "Dragonflies do not sting, contrary to popular belief. They do bite, but they rarely break the skin. This is a small species." Small, but plentiful. And there are lots of different kinds of dragonflies. "There are 7 families in West Virginia, 146 species that have been documented. 6 species have not been verified so I guess you can say we have about 140 species in West Virginia." Patrick McMurtry/Eyewitness News says: "These dragonflies are almost perfectly designed creatures. These insects have been around 250 million years-they were here before the dinosaurs." You can find dragonflies in all kinds of habitats. They're especially fond of water and swamps. The Division of Natural Resources is teaming up with the Federal Department of Agriculture to study these amazing insects and there's a lot left to learn. "Dragonflies usually live anywhere between 1 week and 8 months, depending on the species. The larger, the green darner, which is a migratory species can live a lot longer-they migrate. Migration is an understudied phenomenon with dragonflies." But thanks to their research, and the help of volunteers, we're learning more about dragonflies every year. LINKS TO LEARN MORE W. Va.
