Looking for something to do that both you and your kids will enjoy? The Division of Natural Resources has a suggestion for you. In tonight's West Virginia Wildlife, Patrick McMurtry has some ideas on how you can introduce your children to archery.

Dave McClung/DNR says:
"My son and I have shot since he was 4 years old and that's something we enjoy when we're not doing baseball, wrestling and different organized sports. This is something we can do together, plan and have fun year round."

Dave McClung and his son brock always find time to shoot a bow. Brock's pretty good, thanks in part to natural skill, but, perhaps more importantly, his dad is very supportive.

He's also knowledgable. Dave knows what to do to keep things simple and interesting as kids become familiar with a bow. Getting the right equipment is key.

Dave McClung/DNR says:
"The first thing I would do is visit a professional archery shop, make sure the equipment they select is suited for them, the bow fits them, the arrows are the right size, the get a good target. Make sure when they start out, they start out correctly."

Dave says you should also keep things simple as your kids so they stay interested as their skill level, and confidence, grow. Spending time with your children now could give you both something in common for the rest of your lives.

Dave McClung/DNR says:
"Archery is a sport that parents and children can enjoy together. They can have involvement year round, kids can get out in the back yard and shoot there and progress on to 3-d archery, into hunting and archery is also an olympic sport."

Archery is also a sport you don't have to be a champion to enjoy. From the backyard to the woods of West Virginia, almost anyone can have a good time. All it takes is a bow, some arrows and a little bit of time.
