![]() CONSERVATIONIST
Winning the Daytona 500 brought him fame and fortune. He's not racing these days, instead, he's using the money he won and the fame he earned to make sure the rolling hills of his Virginia home are preserved through the Ward Burton Foundation. Ward Burton Nascar Driver "We think it's important at the start of our foundation to have a model in which we can set the right example. This land where we're at is full of a lot of cultural history, it's full of a lot of pioneer history, settlement history, so we're restoring that." The same thing goes for land right here in West Virginia. Land conservation is something the Division of Natural Resources spends a lot of time on. Once land is developed, it's impossible to restore. Burton says that's important to remember especially when parents get ready to pass their land on to their sons and daughters. Ward Burton Nascar Driver "There's still ways that they can protect thier land and leave their land in a natural state, even at the time that they leave it to their children or if they sell it, there's many different conservation models of ways to structure it through perpetuity to protect their land." "It's our legacy, one thing that's important to us not only that we set the proper example, but that we do it by example, and we preach and live our lives by what we believe. Another thing is it is what makes us who we are as Americans."
