A lot of people get fired up about hunting only to lose interest when the alarm goes off at 5 am. Not Randy Banear. Meet a man who'll do whatever it takes to get into the woods.

W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

Deer hunting is huge in West Virginia. Thousands of people hit the woods every year looking for that trophy buck. Count Randy Baneer in.

"For me, if I put a deer on the ground, that's a trophy. For somebody else, they want a deer with a tree growing out of its head."

But a day in the woods is no easy deal for Randy.

"Boys, I'm telling you, it's rough."

He stalks deer from an electric wheel chair. A motorcycle accident when he was 16 cost him his ability to walk - not his desire to do the things he loves. But the hunting is tough.

"Get the gun up to my shoulder. Once I'm set up, I'll wait until everybody's moved away and I'll pull the gun up to my shoulder and I'll sit there. I'll spend hours just sitting like this, looking around."

Hunters aren't allowed into the woods until half an hour before sunrise or about 6:45 a.m. Randy starts getting ready at 3:00. It takes a big committment from Randy and his wife Denise, but then again, the couple lives for this stuff.

"I'd hunted before my accident, but the first 14 years I didn't think I could do it. Finally, I met up with some guys, shared some ideas, he went to work and next thing you know I was squirrell hunting in 1994. I killed the first deer of my life in 1994 after I'd been in a wheelchair."

So they're off, hoping for a buck, willing to settle for a doe, just glad to be out and alive in the woods of West Virginia.

Randy Banear
Disabled Hunter
"You've got to be real patient. You've got to get out, put your time in and just enjoy being outside."
