DEER CONTROL

Deer hunters hit the woods by the thousands this week, but they weren't the first ones to legally shoot a deer this season. Hunters got to look for deer in a controlled hunt that actually helps the herd and the property owner.

Michael Holstine
Observatory Hunt Coordinator
"To be a good land manager, you have to look at all aspects of the land, not just how you use it but how the wildlife use it."

Mike holstine had his hands full at the observatory in greenbank. The property was literally overrun with deer when he started working there 13 years ago. The unmanagable herd became big trouble.

Michael Holstine
Observatory Hunt Coordinator
"I didn't feel like we were being very good neighbors. We have private property owners to our south and to our north and they were eating their crops and eating their gardens and we had collissions on the main highway, route 92 out front."

That's when holstine turned to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Jim Crum
West Virginia DNR
"The best solution is to address those over abundance problems right up front early on, before you get to the point you can't tolerate them at all and are forced to do something."

Michael Holstine
Observatory Hunt Coordinator
"We did some population studies and some assessments of control possibilities and for our facility. By far the most effective and least expensive was to allow hunters to do what hunters do best and that's come in and control the deer population."

That was 13 years and 12 controlled hunts ago. Now the deer population at the observatory is managable, the deer themselves are healthier. The lucky folks who get to hunt there almost always go home happy.

Michael Holstine
Observatory Hunt Coordinator
"Performing a hunt such as we have here is an excellent way to manage the property, control the population and meet some great new friends.
