      DEER MANAGEMENT 
Jim Crum West Virginia DNR "Deer have a tendancy to overpopulate areas and when they do that they cause not only problems with other animals in their habitat, but a running conflict with people." Too many deer in a given area often means deer in people's gardens and deer jumping into the middle of the road. Overpopulation is also bad for the deer herd. Jim Crum West Virginia DNR "It also affects the deer themselves. You get smaller deer, body weight, size, you get smaller antlers, reproduction falls off and in general you get a less healthy herd." All of that could combine to cost the state millions of dollars in hunting related revenue. You'll be surprised to find out just how much money hunting brings into West Virginia. Jim Crum West Virginia DNR "It's around $220 million in economic impact a year to our state's economy. That's through travel, the multiplier effect through jobs created to supply that type of stuff. That's a considerable sum." Spending money isn't the only way hunters help the state. Crum says the men, women and children with guns and bows are the ones who do the most to keep our deer population in check and healthy. Jim Crum West Virginia DNR "Our hunters don't realize how important they are to the whole program. They are the key, they are the deer managers. They pull the trigger, they manage the deer herd. When they bring that animal to the check station, they manage that deer herd." Just a reminder for you, deer will be especially active the next few weeks so keep a close eye out while driving between dusk and dawn.
