People all over the state are getting ready for the best deer hunting of the season. For the next six weeks you'll probably see more deer than any other time. It's called the rut.

W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

Ray Knotts
DNR Biologist
"They're looking for a mate, they will tavel around to find does that they can breed."

The rut is on! For the next several weeks, bucks and does are gearing up for the most romantic time of the year... And the bucks are getting restless.

Ray Knotts
DNR Biologist
"The bucks start sparring with each other, they're still basically in bachelor groups and this will be followed by the bachelor groups breaking up and the bucks starting to hang out with the does and maybe chasing the does around and it will culminate with the actual breeding."

Division of natural resources biologist ray knotts knows as much as anybody about the annual rut. He says the bucks get territorial and the doe feel maternal. This is the time of the year hunters can't wait for.

Normally a buck will travel in a one mile radius, he has everything he needs in that area but durring the rut, things change dramatically and that same buck can go in five miles and that's good news for hunters.

Ray Knotts
DNR Biologist
"The bucks are usually more active in the rut and pre-rut. They're moving around more and they have a better chance of going around the bow hunter's stand. Bucks are more succeptable to being called in and using a grunt call and being rattled in. Smashing antlers together and making a noise that simulates 2 bucks fighting and the buck will come to that hopefully he's going to steal the doe while the other 2 bucks are fighting."

The rut begins in august, but the peak is right around the corner. Most does will be bred by november 17th. There's another smaller rut period a month later.

Good news for hunters, but not for drivers.

Ray Knotts
DNR Biologist
"The bucks are, and the doe are too, moving around a lot more and consequentially are more get to cross the roads and if they cross the roads, they are more likely to be involved in a vehicle collission. People should be especially careful durring that time of year."

Here are some tips on driving durring the rut season when deer are more likely to be on the side of the road.

  • Keep a close eye out for deer, and if you have a passenger, have them watch, too.

  • If you see a deer, keep in mind its movements are very unpredictable and they can bolt in front of you for no reason and without warning.

  • If you are on the interstate, don't swerve to miss a deer. Swerving at high speeds can cause a major accident.
