The Mountaineer Food Bank works hard to provide food to needy families all over West Virginia. Every year thousands of deer are donated as part of the hunters helping the hungry program. Take a look at how the Division of Natural Resources and the food bank team up in a unique partnership that helps thousands of people.

Cheryl Carter works with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources on the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. The partnership puts meat on a lot of West Virginia tables. Great tasting meat.

"When the program is in full swing, this freezer is 3/4 of the way full and that's with all the product, the venison, going in and out."

That's a lot of meals for a lot of thankful families. Families that could live right down the road, or even closer.

"When we talk about the families we feed, it's not just indigent people on the street, it is the working poor, it is people who might live next door to you. People that you might not have any idea they're in need of help. Last year we had a donation of over 1,700 actual deer donated to processors that netted us over 60,000 pounds of ground venison meat."

That's enough deer meat to fill up their truck and then some, but with just a little bit of help, they could do so much more.

The Hunters Helping the Hungry program needs cash to run. Cash donations translates into more deer meat and more people helped.

Marshall Snedegar
W.Va. DNR
"Instead of having 60,000 pounds of meat donated like we had last year, we could have close to 200,000 pounds of meat donated over the course of one year if we had a good season and think what that would mean."

This is the 12th year for the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. Last year more than 260,000 people were helped.

Because the DNR is not allowed to provide money for the program, it relies entirely on cash donations.
