BOW HUNTING

The first youth hunt of the year is over, but now hunters looking to get an early start on the season are getting their bows out of the closet. If it's been a while since they've had a bow in their hands, new technology could make their weapon obsolete.

The newest trend in hunting is also one of the oldest ways to put meat on the table.

"In the 70's, this campaign was aimed at gun hunters, encouraging them to pick up a bow and try bow hunting."

This isn't your grandfathers' bow. The old fiberglass bows are ancient history. Bows, and bow hunting, have evolved.

Frank Addington
Expert Archer
"Volkswagen to Ferrari. Speedwise, the bows are getting better, the materials are getting better. You've got a lot more innovation, you've got things like dampeners which are built on the bow which absorbs shock. You've got perimeter weighted cams that helps with the speed."

And the new technology makes the arrows fly faster and the shots more accurate. For most folks.

One of the keys to successful bow hunting is, of course, being able to hit what you're aiming at. Distance and accuracy are keys. I still need a little more work.

Frank Addington

"The bows for women and kids are awesome."

More and more, you'll see kids and women behind the bow. And you'll see them bagging game.

Frank Addington
Expert Archer
"My mother has harvested 16 black bears and some of them are trophy bears, using 45 pounds. Today's bows put more energy in the air. 20 years ago guys thought they needed 70-80 lbs. That's not true."

And that's opening up the sport to even more hunters of all kinds.

If you do plan on bow hunting this season, the division of natural resources wants to remind you to carefully check out your equipment before hitting the woods. They also want you to try out your tree stand to make sure it's safe before going on a hunt.
