![]() HUNTERS SALUTE THIS MAST
"Deer, bear, turkey, squirrels, there's a lot of different animials." Biologists with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources scour the woods every year looking for mast -- various nuts and berries that will feed the animals through the winter. Gary Sharp/DNR Biologist "From the amount of mast in a given year, you can predict survival of animals and what conditions are going to be the following year." That's important for several reasons. If mast is plentiful, hunters will see more deer, bears and squirrels next year. And they'll also know the best spots to hunt this year. You can walk right under this persimmon tree and never pay it any attention, but you can bet the animals know all about it. That's because almost any kind of animal will eat this kind of mast. Gary Sharp/DNR Biologist "There's persimmon, there's dogwoood, there's hazelnut, there's elderberry." And there's also acorns, the favorite food for many of the hunter's favorite game. The mast survey will tell you where acorn production is up. And where it's down. Gary Sharp/DNR Biologist "It must be a complicated event. It doesn't seem complicated to us but it must be because you really can't predict what it's going to be like until you come out and look." If you can't look yourself, the DNR biologists do the research for you. The 2004 West Virginia Wildlife Mast Survey and Hunters Outlook is due out any time now.
