Anne Cummings/U.S. Forestry - "It's a very big deal. There are 51 groups from 51 different places including Manitoba, British Columbia, Prince Edwards Island, Texas, California, Florida. It's a continental event." For many, the learning started the second they stepped into the woods. Jaque Lovett/Arizona Team -"It's very green compared to where I came from in the desert." Michael Watson/Michigan Team-"It just love it out here in West Virginia!" These high school students will learn all about the woods of West Virginia before the competition begins. That's key because many of the questions will be cover what they learn about nature in the Mountain State. Art Shomo/DNR Information Specialist - "We try to make it as hands on as possible and even site specific to the area here which is why today we're having a teaching day. Some of these people from Canada, Alaska and California have no idea about West Virginia wildlife or soils" What better way to learn about the outdoors than study in groups outdoors? Jaque Lovett/Arizona Team - "Here you can pick up things and feel them and actually see what's going on. In a textbook it's just paper. It's a complete other dimension out there." From skins to skulls, bats to bugs, these future environmentalists are learning from folks who know our woods the best. Foresters and biologists from the DNR take an active role in teaching...and testing. The winning team splits the first place prize - $30,000 in scholarship money. And this year the prize is even bigger. Art Shomo/DNR Information Specialist - "We're hosting this at Wesleyan College and one of the vice presidents at the college kinda upped the ante a little bit and offered a $10,000 scholarship per year to any member of the winning team who wants to come back and go to Weslayan College." That could make the winning prize worth a whopping $230,000. Florida won this year's competition. West Virginia's St. Mary's came in 8th place, the first time a team from the Mountain State has cracked the top 10.
