Buying a new fishing rod will do more than just catch fish. It can help to get a fish on your line.

W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

You may not know it, but you are making your wildlife experience better with help from Uncle Sam.

W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

Dr. Robert Sousa/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - "Approximately 500 million dollars is collected each year and we return it to the states."

Anytime you buy a hunting or fishing gear you pay a tax. The money is being put to good use for natural resource projects across the state. Plus, helping the wildlife of West Virginia.

And federal aid funds means big money for West Virginia

Dr. Robert Sousa/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - "Sport fish restoration receives about 2.5 million dollars and wildlife restoration receives about two million dollars."

W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

Scott Warner/DNR Federal Aid Coordinator - "It accounts for about a third of our overall operating budget. If it wasn't for federal aid funds we wouldn't be able to do the activities we've been able to accomplish the past 40 years."

The money is protected solely for wildlife purposes and that is exactly what the DNR is doing.

W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

Scott Warner/DNR Federal Aid Coordinator - "We have 21 federal aid projects in the state right now. They range from everything from the work we're doing in Southern West Virginia with the black bears and muskie research on the Buckhannon River. It also assists with hunter education programs, boating access sites, fishing access sites and stream restoration efforts. We're involved in using the money for land acquisition or wildlife management areas such as the Green Bottom Wildlife Management area.

Look for this sign, and when you see it, you know your tax dollars are at work.

Federal aid is an example how hunters and anglers continue to be the biggest conservationists, contributing millions of dollars each year to protect our wildlife resources.
