Chris O'Bara/DNR Fish Biologist - "It basically doubles the capacity we have in the state of West Virginia to raise warm water fish. We can heat and cool water. It is a state-of-the-art facility." The 15 million dollar complex opened three years ago and is now operating at full capacity. Fish start being reared in the hatchery building where eggs are hatched. The baby fish are kept in troughs before being transferred outside in the facilities 35 ponds.
One advancement at the Apple Grove Hatchery is the polyurethane lining, which preserves water quality. Also, the lake drains much easier, which is less stressful on the fish.
And Ryan will put the net to good use, as an amazing amount of fish will head to our waters across the state.
The average size of the fish is three inches, but with the improvements the DNR is also producing larger fish. Chris O'Bara/DNR Fish Biologist- "We have been raising what we consider advanced fingerling muskie and produce a 12 to 16 inch fish. These will do better in our systems, they survive better and provide a quicker turn around for people to actually fish for them. The hatchery process will be used for common stockings, but also to restore fish populations that will make a better experience for the angler.
The funding the hatchery was joint effort between the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and Army Corp of Engineers.
