It's a hatchery that produces fish like a factory to bring more and bigger fish for our lakes and rivers.

It's new, it's big, and it's modern. The Apple Grove Hatchery will enhance the warm-water fisheries of West Virginia.

Chris O'Bara/DNR Fish Biologist - "It basically doubles the capacity we have in the state of West Virginia to raise warm water fish. We can heat and cool water. It is a state-of-the-art facility."

The 15 million dollar complex opened three years ago and is now operating at full capacity. Fish start being reared in the hatchery building where eggs are hatched. The baby fish are kept in troughs before being transferred outside in the facilities 35 ponds.

Ryan Bosserman/Asst. Hatchery Manager - "We have half acre ponds, acre ponds, acre and a half ponds, two acre ponds and our big daddy five acre pond. This is where all the water comes from."

One advancement at the Apple Grove Hatchery is the polyurethane lining, which preserves water quality. Also, the lake drains much easier, which is less stressful on the fish.

Ryan Bosserman/Asst. Hatchery Manager - "They come out through a twelve inch pipe and they all go down here to our concrete catch basins. We're able to net the fish out."

And Ryan will put the net to good use, as an amazing amount of fish will head to our waters across the state.

Ryan Bosserman/Asst. Hatchery Manager -"We usually stock between 300 and 400 thousand walleye. Our hybrid striped bass we stock 100 to 200. And channel catfish around 100 thousand."

The average size of the fish is three inches, but with the improvements the DNR is also producing larger fish.

Chris O'Bara/DNR Fish Biologist- "We have been raising what we consider advanced fingerling muskie and produce a 12 to 16 inch fish. These will do better in our systems, they survive better and provide a quicker turn around for people to actually fish for them.

The hatchery process will be used for common stockings, but also to restore fish populations that will make a better experience for the angler.

Chris O'Bara/DNR Fish Biologist- "Long term, who knows what we can do with the facility we have here, but the sky would be the limit."

The funding the hatchery was joint effort between the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and Army Corp of Engineers.
