W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

Mike Bryant says to son Alex, "Do you see it."
Alex Bryant replies, "Yeah, it is right there."

It's about teamwork and being outside bonding with the family.

Bret Preston/DNR Fisheries Management - "Fishing is a great family pastime. I think in this age of many competing activities, fishing is one of those things kids will enjoy their entire lives."

Alex Bryant/Teays Valley - "Coming out here and fishing and spending quality time with my dad. Plus, trying to beat him catching fish."

And coming out on top doesn't hurt

Paul Bender - "What do you get if you win?"
Alex "Bragging rights.
Paul Bender - "Nothing better than that."
Alex - "Nope!"

Mike Bryant (Dad)/Teays Valley - "We are very competitive, but you got to love it. It is actually quite relaxing to come out here and spend a wonderful day fishing with my son."

Alright, I got one. Big fish or small fish. It really doesn't matter, as long as you are with the family, you're having fun.

Bret recommends fishing for small fish, blue gill are great, using live bait and let the kids be kids.

Bret Preston/DNR Fisheries Management - "A child's attention is going to be drawn away from the fishing activity to other things going on. It might be looking at turtles and frogs and that's OK. It's all part of the outdoor experience."

Taking the kids fishing is very affordable. Children 14 and under do not require a license and no fancy equipment is needed. Mike Bryant/Teays Valley - "Fishing is inexpensive, 20 bucks for the rod and reel and dollar fifty for bait and your set and ready to go."

And leave it to mom for words of wisdom.

Lee Ann Preston - "We have a quote we have on our wall. "Each cast is an occasion for hope'"

The best places to get kids fishing and have success are at smaller lakes and ponds. Some hots spots include Cookskin Park, Ridenoor Lake and the Kanawha State Forest pond.
