![]() PREHISTORIC FISH
Scott Morrison W.Va. DNR Fish Biologist "This is one of the oldest fish in West Virginia. They were swimming in what would have been part of West Virginia right after the dinosaurs. The only other fish similar to this one that has a pronounced paddle is found in China." It's relative is the shark. Scott Morrison "They don't have bones. They have cartilage." But don't worry about being attacked. They don't have teeth or eat meat, just microscopic plankton. And their mouths are designed to do just that.
"This part gets wider too. They are really taking in a good column of water. The plankton will get stuck on these. They are kind of like rakes. They have a mechanism where they can push that stuff into their stomach." And what's with that bill?
"The bill is used to help stabilize it (the fish). Or it has these, you can see these small areas on the bill. It's thought that these are sensors that the fish uses to tell where the concentrations of plankton are."
Scott Morrison "These are some of the fastest growing fish we have in West Virginia. In ponds they will grown an inch a week and that means by September they will be over 20 inches long.
Paddlefish fish cannot be caught in West Virginia. If you do catch one, return it to the water immediately. Links to learn more Sport Fish Of West Virginia USGS FAQ about Paddlefish W.Va.
