W.Va. Wildlife with Paul Bender
TROUT TRAIN

It's one of the more unsual ways of stocking trout - by railroad. When remote sections of rivers are stocked it means a better wilderness trout fishing experience.

These trout are getting ready for the ride of their lives. Hitting the rails with a final destination swimming free in the Shavers Fork.

The adventure begins loading the specially equipped pickup truck and trailer onto the tracks. Fresh spring water is pumped into the tanks and then 900 pounds of trout are transferred. Blow the horn and we are off.

The train is used to get the fish into remote sections of the river where vehicles cannot go. Once onboard, the clock is ticking to get the fish into the water.

Tom Oldham
W.Va. DNR Fish Biologist
"They came in a large hatchery truck and we have smaller tanks. Every minute they are in there is a little more stressful on them. So we try to get them out as quick as we can."

The DNR will stock Shavers by rail in once in April and May placing 8,000 pounds of trout into the wilderness. Plus, because these are special stockings, they receive an extra nice variety of fish.

Tom Oldham
" We have a real mixed bag of fish here today. The brown trout will last longer and can stand a warmer water temperature. The brook trout bite a little better. We had a smattering of golden rainbow trout. The bulk were the rainbow. And we had a few brood trout in the three pound range."

From the hatchery to the rail line, this is literally the end of the line for these trout, until they reach the end of your line.

And that is the point of this DNR effort, to bring you a different fishing experience.

Tom Oldham
"We want to provide fisherman of West Virginia a really unique situation. To fish in something other than driving up a road or along a stream that runs along a road. They may get to see an eagle, a bear, or a bobcat. It's a pretty wild experience really."

The DNR also stocks the Buckannon River by rail. The specialized truck was donated by Trout Unlimited.

And you can ride the rails and do some trout fishing too by traveling on the Tygart Flyer or Cheat Mountain Salamder.
