Why are nursing home patients forming bird watching clubs across the state, and what seed should you use in your bird feeder?

W.Va. Wildlife from Eyewitness News

It's a simple concept, putting up a bird feeder, but it is making a profound difference to nursing home residents.

Laura Weese
Elkins, WV
"Oh, yes they're my favorite. I had a bird feeder for a long time before I came here."

Laura is benefiting from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resource's Nursing Home Bird Feeder Project, which has built 81 feeder for homes across the state. The project is a huge success.

Fred Bird
Nursing home Director of Social Services
"It's been great! The residents really love seeing the birds, they love seeing all the animals. Anything that can attract animals has been very good. It makes them feel at home."

Residents can enjoy watching birds right from their rooms. Plus, the DNR provides posters and literature about the birds. It has become so popular some homes now have bird watching clubs.

About a quarter of the state's population either participates in bird feeding or watching, but did you know that it's actually important to clean your bird feeder.

Kathy Leo
W.Va. Division of Natural Resources
"There are a lot of avian born diseases and when birds cluster together around a feeder, they can pass diseases. You should use a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water. It's really important to keep your bird feeder clean."

Kathy recommends a good wash once a month. She also says for best results you need to pick the right seed.

A typical commercial seed mix contains a lot of red milo, which birds in this part of the country don't care for and generally won't eat.

Kathy Leo
"We tell people the best all around bird seed is the black oil type bird seed. One other thing, a suet block will bring all kinds of different birds. Your wood peckers, chickadees, titmice and Carolina wrens.

And if birds are around, Laura's happy.

Laura Weese
"I enjoy my birds. I like different kinds that come, sometimes we have yellow birds and little sparrows."

The DNR offers publications about bird feeding, bird identification and bird watching.
