Hundreds of people across the state will be scanning the skies and counting the birds.

Hear a bird, see a bird, count a bird. That will be happening all over the state and country in the 104th Annual Christmas Bird Count.

"It's considered the oldest and largest continuous wildlife survey. In the first count there were 27 participants. During last year's count there were 50,000 people that participated."

The National Audubon Society coordinates the count nationwide and here's how it work. Birders will count in seventeen distinct fifteen mile wide circles across the state in a 24 hour period. All individual birds seen or heard are counted and species recorded.

Rob Tallman
"The first thing we'll do is lay out the map like this and we have our fifteen mile diameter circle, which is the count area. We pick areas for each person or group of people to go look for birds. So the idea is to cover as much of this as we can, ideally all of it. We can do counts by vehicle, by foot and numerous other ways."

Obviously birds fly and move so it is impossible to get a perfect result, but the count is intended as a general survey and the findings are a valuable tool for researchers.

Rob Tallman
"It gives us a real good indication of winter bird populations in the state. Over time, this has been done for a number years, you can see trends. We've found that things for the most part in West Virginia are stable, in these winter birds.

West Virginia is outstanding place for bird watching with the around 300 known species. For bird watchers this count is a great time.

Rob Tallman
"It's lots of fun! You see some different things because you have some birds from farther north that spend the winter here. At the end of the day, we all get together and have dinner and sit around and count. Everyone tells stories about what they saw and where."
