An important part of the DNR's mission is to control the deer population and that cannot be without you, the hunter.

Deer, deer, and more deer. It doesn't get better for hunters.

Dr. Jim Crum
W.Va. DNR Biologist
"In 1953, our harvest records show a little under 20,000 deer were harvested statewide. To put that into perspective, last year we recorded a harvest of 255,000."

But with an increased deer population, that only makes the DNR Deer Management Program more important.

Dr. Jim Crum
"It's designed to keep the deer population in balance with Mother Nature and to keep it in balance with people."

Management is done on a county by county basis. Last year in 38 counties the DNR found the population too high, which can lead to problems.

Dr. Jim Crum
"What I have here is these animals are the same age. These are one and half year-old animals. This set of antlers, which we see a lot of today, this is because the population is not in balance with the food supply that's available for the animals."

The deer population is kept in control by hunting does.

Dr. Jim Crum
"The antlerless harvest is essential for having a healthier heavier, more productive herd. That's just the bottom line."

Hunter's you're doing your part in the management process when you bring your deer to an official game checking station.

Dr. Jim Crum
"It's critical to the management system we have. Check that animal so we get a count of the animals that are harvested. Based off of that we determine the number of antlerless deer that need to be harvested.

Besides deer harverst numbers, data about antler beam diameter, age based off teeth structure and disease in the popluation are collected and in turn is used in the regulation process.

So hunters check your deer and help your own hunting experience.

Besides keeping the health of the deer population in check, hunting is the state's largest tourism activity contributing more than 300 million dollars to the economy.

There is an expanded 22 day antlerless season for private land owners in all counties except, Logan, Mingo, Wyoming and McDowell.
