Women hunters are rare in West Virginia, but don't tell that two these ladies. I'll show you why two women are bucking the trend.

Sherry Young
Charleston, WV
"The first thing he said to me was 'I have never seen a woman hunter before.' People are surprised when you get out there."

That's because only 2 percent of hunters in West Virginia are women. But stereotypes aside, Sherry Young and Ashley Thompson are hunters and wouldn't have it any other way.

Sherry Young
"It is my favorite thing to do. I love the solitude, the beauty, getting out and just seeing what's out here."

For Ashley its a family affair

Ashley Thompson
St. Albans, WV
"Because when its hunting season we're close. We're always together, out in the woods, walking, talking. It's a family time for me."

And she doesn't mind being part of a rare breed

Ashley Thompson
"At school, I'm one of the only girl that does, so it gets you really in with the guys, because it gives you something to talk with them about no one else has the opportunity too.

Hunting certainly is a male dominated sport, but if your a woman interested in opportunities, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources offers the Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program.

Sherry Young
"It's an excellent program. They have two workshops a year. They vary from how to turkey hunt to how to go back packing overnight."

Not only do they enjoy spending time with their families, both are accomplished hunters having successfully harvested turkeys and deer. They don't even mind a little friendly competition.

Sherry Young
"I was the only person at our deer camp to get a deer and it just killed the guys. If Sherry got a deer, then by darn I could get a deer."

Ashley Thompson
"I got a twenty two pound gobbler with a ten inch beard. Plus, my dad has never gotten a turkey in his life, so that was something to rub in his face."

The Becoming An Outdoors Woman Program will hold a special deer hunt and seminar at Snowshoe Mountain on December 6th through the 8th. This will be a great introduction for women interested in hunting.
