Dodge ball and kick ball are common activities in physical education programs. But can you imagine arrows flying around? It's happening.

Bows and arrows are coming to a school near you. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and the West Virginia Department of Education have teamed up in a new and exciting endeavor, "West Virginia's Archery in the Schools Program."

Scott Warner
DNR Biologist
"We've selected 18 schools to participate in our pilot program. We have a wonderful curriculum here that teaches kids, not only the enjoyment of shooting a bow, but there is also a lot of discipline to this."

Archery is a sport girls and boys of all ages can be involved, without any limitations. The lessons learned will be taken outside the classroom.

Barry Wheatcraft
Program Coordinator
"These kids will build self confidence. Plus, this is a life-time skill they can take with them and use the rest of their life."

Participating schools will receive a kit worth $2,000 which includes everything from bow and arrows to instruction manuals.

Scott Warner
"These are actually pretty cool pieces of equipment that allows them [the students] to be really good and reach their potential."

And each lesson will be taught by certified instructors.

Scott Warner
"Two DNR representatives and a member from the Bow Hunters Association received National Level Two Certification. The teachers participating in this program have to follow that curriculum."

The program is modeled from the State of Kentucky, with the governor's mission to rapidly expand to other schools.

Bob Wise
Governor, West Virginia
"If the experience in Kentucky and other states is any indication this program will grow rapidly. Certainly in West Virginia where there is a great interest in archery and bow hunting. We think this is going to be something the students really enjoy."

The aim is to get kids involved in this growing sport and many are already excited.

Scott Warner
"The smiles we've received from the little kids, who have been able to do this when they hit a bull's eye or just being able to shoot an arrow successfully has been wonderful."

Besides the DNR and the Department of Education, private companies and associations are working hard to make this program a success.
