A DISABILITY WON'T PREVENT HUNTING

A disability ends any chance of hunting, right? Wrong! Meet a man that has overcome his physical limitations and is hunting again.

In 1980 a motorcycle accident left Randy Benear paralyzed from the shoulders down.

Randy Benear, Dunbar, WV
"I don't have use of my triceps. I don't have wrist extension, or wrist movement in each hand. My hands just flop around on their own will."

Randy grew up with hunting and the accident stripped him of his love.

Randy Benear, Dunbar, WV
"They don't have paved sidewalks or concrete sidewalks in the woods. And not being able to hold a gun or pull the trigger, because my fingers didn't work, I pretty much felt my hunting days were over."

But his passion was still there and with some engineering magic, Randy would put on his blazed orange again.

Randy Benear, Dunbar, WV
"Fourteen years after I broke my neck I was hunting again. I was reliving a part of my past."

He was back hunting with a custom designed mount including a motor to move the gun up and down. An extension on the trigger for easy firing. Randy still has control, making slight movements to fine tune the shot. And it works. He took his first deer, ever, after the accident.

Randy Benear/Dunbar, Dunbar, WV
"I often tease folks, I had to break my neck in order to get my first deer. It was very rewarding."

For years Randy hunted from his van on the side of the road, but he always wanted more, so now he heads deep into the woods to get closer to nature.

Randy Benear, Dunbar, WV
"I wanted to be out in the woods, be a part of nature, that really is what hunting is all about."

Randy is part of the physically challenged advisory board for the DNR. It recommends ways to improve outdoor activities for the disabled. The message is simple.

Randy Benear, Dunbar, WV
"What I want to do in West Virginia is tell folks that if I can do this, anyone can. If all the effort we make in all these programs can change one person's life then it's all worth while."

Because it certainly had an impact for Randy.

Randy Benear, Dunbar, WV
"It dramatically changed my life. I feel much better as a person."

Based on the boards recommendations, the DNR has opened the youth hunting days to the disabled.

The antlerless hunt for people with a Class Q lincense will be held on Saturday, November 1st, December 22nd and 23rd, 2003.
