Last year hunters donated an astounding 80,000 pounds of deer meat to the hungry of West Virginia. It's a good cause and everyone can get involved whether you are a hunter or not.

Hunters, your extra deer harvest can bring meals to the less fortunate of West Virginia.

"It is important," says Sandy Perrine from Manna Meal. "It saves us money. It's very important."

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resource's, Hunters Helping the Hungry program, provides thousands of pounds of fresh venison to area food banks

"Hunters who have enough deer in their freezers and want to harvest another deer, can harvest that deer and take it to an approved processing plant. There it's turned into two pound packages of ground venison," explained Marshall Snedegar from the W.Va. DNR.

The meat is put to good use. Manna Meal serves hundreds of meals a day, seven days a week. Last year they went through a ton of deer meet.

Sandy told us they made chili on the day we spoke. "We used 36 [2 pound] packages, just for one lunch!"

Hunters are doing their part when they donate a deer to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. But, what the program really needs is cold, hard, cash.

"We're at a critical situation in being able to continue the program. What we really need now is for people to donate money." said Snedegar.

More money means more deer meat for the hungry, Snedegar told us. "Instead of having 2,500 deer like we did last year, we could probably have well over 5,000 deer. That just puts more food on the tables for needy West Virginians."

That would make Sandy very happy. "I don't think people realize how many hungry people there are. How many people eat here. And how beneficial the money would be."

If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources' Hunters Helping the Hungry, call Marshall Snedegar at 304-558-2771.
