The fall archery season opens this Saturday, October 18th but the sport is not just for hunters. For many it has become a year-round activity.

You don't have to be an expert to have fun with archery. Technology has revolutionized the sport.

Frank Addington, Jr., Addington's Bowhunter Shop
"The bows are kid friendly now. We have a lot of young people coming into the sport, a lot of ladies and it is a year-round sport. It always has been a year-round sport, but the new equipment makes it that much better."

Frank's family has been in the archery business for years, and is solely dedicated to the sport

Frank Addington, Jr.
"We eat, sleep and breathe archery here. We focus on archery, our customers, keeping them tuned, shooting accurately, and that's all we want to do. This is our passion!"

Having the bow built around you is critical

Frank Addington, Jr.
"With today's equipment, it is more important to get set up right. You need to have the bow custom fit to you. We set the bows up as if we were setting them up for ourselves."

And with a little instruction you can be on target in a quick hurry.

Frank Addington, Jr.
"A customer can come through our front door never having touched a bow. We can have him or her, by the time they leave, hitting bull's eyes consistently at twenty yards."

So let's see if this works, I haven't shoot a bow since I was in the boy scouts, and after a few shoots.

Frank Addington, Jr.
"Hasta La Vista Baby! Yep, bull's eye!"

Paul Bender (After hitting target)
"That's nice! That feels great! I like that!"

With the improvements in technology, archery has exploded in popularity. And with the abundance of game in West Virginia, hunters this is the perfect way to extend your season.

Scott Warner, DNR Biologist
"Each year approximately 150,000 people go to the woods of West Virginia to enjoy some of the best bow hunting in the Eastern United States. We have a three month season and liberal bag limits. One third of our bow hunters going out there are successfully hunting a deer, which is amazing!"

The DNR uses our large bow harvest to help manage the deer population.

The archery season for deer begins this Saturday, October 18th and lasts until December 31st. You are allowed to harvest three deer.

Addington's Bowhunter Shop is located in Teays Valley and you can reach them at 755-2085.
