Hunting season is almost here, but kids get an early start. I'll tell you about a special hunting day, just for kids.

Father and son, daughter and dad coming together for hunting.

Brendan Mullins of Kanawha City likes to hunt with his father. "I like to do it because I can spend time with him, instead of being outside away from him all the time," said Brendan.

Saturday, October 4th is a special youth squirrel hunt.

"The Division of Natural Resources established the youth season as a special day, where parents or adults can encourage their kids or introduce kids, to the enjoyment of hunting. There is not a better opportunity than squirrel hunting," said Scott Warner, a West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Biologist.

Scott has some tips. "Try not to be in the woods more than a couple to three hours. If your son or daughter is getting bored, it may be a time to call it quits for the day. The best thing about this youth hunt is spending time with your kids."

For Jim Faucet it doesn't even matter if they see anything. "It's a good day just to get out and walk around, that's what we both enjoy. If we don't see any animals, we don't see any animals, but we're hunting."

Getting the kids involved in hunting and shooting at an early age is important. And its not just for boys, Megan Fawcett started when she was six.

"I was shooting at a piece of chewed up gum on a paper plate It was fun! I got to chew all that gum, stick it on a paper plate and shoot at it. What's not to love!" said Megan.

For these parents, bringing their kids to the range isn't just about shooting guns, it's also about learning respect for firearms.

Mike Bryant of Teays Valley said, "I really stress safety. I have been trying to instruct how to handle a gun, the do's and dont's, because I try to stress to him that once you squeeze the trigger you can't pull that bullet back."

The lessons are paying off, Mike's son, Alex, knows his guns. And these kids can shoot!

The youth squirrel hunt is Saturday, October 4th. It is all day long for children under 14 years old. Kids must be accompanied by a licensed hunter 21 or older. Adults are not allow to carry any firearms. However, you are allowed to assist kids with their guns.
