![]() OHIO RIVER FISHING
Although I'm sure I spotted a swordfish, Chris O'Bara, a biologist with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources assures me I'm wrong. "This is a long nose gar, we also have spotted gar and short-nose gar. This is one of the more prehistoric species of fish in the river. They're a little bit different looking than anything we've seen today," said O'Bara. I say watch out for those teeth! On the Ohio River there are more than 75 different types of fish and there are plenty to go around. But, it wasn't always like this.
A clean Ohio River combined with its size, supports fish diversity. "There is a lot of different variety of habitat on a large river that supports the variety of fish species," said O'Bara. "It amazes people."
With so many fish, it is easy to get confused on what's, what! The DNR offers a free brochure about fishing and a map of the Ohio River. Just email me with your name and address if you would like one.
