![]() HUNTERS WANT 'EM BIG
Ray Knotts, a West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Biologist, showed us how they grow. "In five years, this is one antler off of the same deer and each year the deer antler grew back a larger antler than in previous years," said Knotts.
Ray Knotts said the size of the antlers is directly linked to the amount of food available to the deer. "The better its year-round nutrition is, especially its winter and early spring nutrition, the larger antlers it is going to grow." Most people recognize deer antlers in the fall when they have big racks, but they actually have a life cycle and antlers grow fast.
Knotts said antler growth is affected by the size of the deer population. "You have an over abundance of deer and they compete for the food, their body size is going to suffer and they are going to have smaller antlers." The DNR's Deer Management Program is designed to maintain deer populations and that doesn't mean just hunting bucks.
When you're hunting, you are helping the management process when you tag a deer. Statistics gathered from checking stations end up working to benefit your hunting experience and more importantly maintain a healthier deer population. The Division of Natural Resources has expanded the hunting season for antlerless deer to better control the population. Links to learn more
