Are you fishing for facts about muskie? Climb on board as I show you what the W.Va. DNR is doing to make your fishing experience better.

The Buckhannon River is home to the state's largest muskie population. We know this because the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is studying this monster fish here.

Kevin Yokum, W.Va. DNR Fisheries Biologist, said, "Since last April we have shocked 162 fish in here, 88 have been tagged."

An electro fishing boat delivers a current into the water shocking the muskie for capture.

The fish are then marked with a tag, smaller than a finger nail, which allows the fish to tracked.

Muskies are allusive to fisherman and scientists, but this new research is going to improve the sports fisheries.

"We're doing this research to try to understand the muskie, understand its environment, so we can improve the muskie fishing in West Virginia," said Yokum.

Once a fish is caught, it is scanned, size and weight recorded and movement history checked.

Fish will get caught repeatedly over the course of many years. Kevin Yokum showed us a fish that had last been caught 210 days ago. "You can see this fish moved about 150 yards," he said.

This day we added a new fish to the study.

"This is brand new fish, never been tagged before. We have a pit tag, transmitter and hypodermic needle. I am going to slowly slide that under the skin and then back out of the fish. Not even a drop of blood. This tag will give us the ability to track that fish for years and years to come," said Yokum.

This research is turning up some interesting tips for anglers.

"The muskies in the Buckhannon River really have a home range. They really don't move around as much as we predicted they did," said Jim Walker, another West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist.

The research also helps the DNR manage the river.

"We cut back on the stocking because there are plenty of fish in there and there is no reason to add more fish to the system," said Walker.

If you are fishing, the W.Va. DNR has set 30 inches as the legal limit for a muskie. Anything smaller must be thrown back.
