Kevin Yokum, W.Va. DNR Fisheries Biologist, said, "Since last April we have shocked 162 fish in here, 88 have been tagged." An electro fishing boat delivers a current into the water shocking the muskie for capture.
Muskies are allusive to fisherman and scientists, but this new research is going to improve the sports fisheries. "We're doing this research to try to understand the muskie, understand its environment, so we can improve the muskie fishing in West Virginia," said Yokum. Once a fish is caught, it is scanned, size and weight recorded and movement history checked.
This day we added a new fish to the study.
This research is turning up some interesting tips for anglers. "The muskies in the Buckhannon River really have a home range. They really don't move around as much as we predicted they did," said Jim Walker, another West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist. The research also helps the DNR manage the river.
If you are fishing, the W.Va. DNR has set 30 inches as the legal limit for a muskie. Anything smaller must be thrown back. Links to learn more West Virginia Chapter of Muskies Inc.
