![]() VICIOUS FISH-ANGLERS DREAM
A local fisherman told us, "He (the muskie) was chasing a bass up on the bank and the bass had to jump over a stump to try to get away from him, but I think he got him anyway." The muskie can grow more than fifty inches and they are vicious.
Muskies bodies are built to attack. "It catches its prey in short bursts and ambushing. It's designed for darting quick action," said Yokum. Although big these fish are hard to find and catch some fishermen take it as a challenge. Anglers can literally fish for days trying to catch a fish and won't see one.
"We have been just blown away by the muskie numbers here. Undoubtedly the highest concentration of muskie in the state." The Buckhannon is a muskie haven because six miles have been protected as catch and release, plus the conditions are ideal.
So what can anglers expect? Yokum says anyone fishing is going to see a lot of fish. "On the clear waters of the Buckhannon it is not uncommon during a trip to see 10 or 12 muskie. You may not necessarily catch them, but you know they are out there." And if you do hook one? Be prepared for a viscous attack and a great fight! "Oh, what a rush! To see that fish come out, slam your bait, rocket through the air, peel off line," said Yokum.
If you want to try to catch these huge fish, the Buckhannon River is located in the town of Buckhannon in Upshur County. Links to learn more West Virginia Chapter of Muskies Inc.
