![]() TAGGING FISH
The Division of Natural Resources has tagged more than 230 large mouth bass, all in the name of research. Mark Scott, a biologist for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources fisheries, said, "We tag bass in Sleepy Creek Lake which is up in the eastern panhandle and here at Plum Orchard Lake in Fayette county. What we are gaining from this study is we are able to see how many fish are being caught and if they are being released. So we are getting an idea of what kind of pressure we are seeing in our lakes.
"There are always rumors out there," says Mark Scott. "People say they keep every fish they catch, that's not always true, this gives us a good idea of what they are keeping and releasing." If you are having a good day fishing at Plum Orchard Lake and you happen to snag a large mouth bass with a tag, what you want to do is cut off this tag and send it to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. A mail and email address for the DNR is printed on the tag and when you send in the information, they will send you a reward.
The best news is the data you help collect is helping everyones fishing experience. Mark Scott says the data they get from fisherman is important. "It's kind of neat because it gives the fishman a chance to participate in his sport and help us, help him."
To access from U.S. 19 take state Route 15 from Oak Hill to Mossy then state Routes 23 and 23/1.
