If you're looking for a fun family activity that the kids will love, why not take them fishing! I've got a great spot to catch fish.

Cody Arthur and his sister Krista love to go fishing with their grandpa. Cody says he loves it, "Because its fun and you catch lots of fish!"

And grandpa enjoys teaching them the art of catching the prized fish. "I'd rather see them catch the fish than myself. It's more enjoyment." said Basham.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources offers plenty of hot spots where kids are almost guaranteed to catch fish.

Mark Scott is a biologist with the DNR Fisheries. "This is a great way to get the kids out, take them fishing, catch some blue gill. They're always biting especially in small impoundments like this."

It is not the size of the fish that matters, in fact, Mark recommends going after smaller fish.

"Don't try to get the kid fishing for bass, big fish, right off the bat, because you don't catch a lot of fish and if they (the kids) get bored, they're going to want to quit fishing," said Scott.

Taking the kids fishing is very affordable. Children 14 and under do not require a license and no fancy equipment is needed.

The great thing about Plum Orchard Lake is that you can rent little boats, to take the kids out fishing or just out for a ride.

Scott recalls when he was younger and would go fishing. "I know I used to fish on the Greenbrier River a lot. I would take a break and catch crawfish, play in the water, go back and fish a little bit, just have a good time."

In the end the size of the fish really doesn't matter. It is the fun of fishing and joy of family being together.

Plum Orchard Lake is located about 30 minutes south of Charleston, just off the Mossy exit along the Turnpike.

Most smaller lakes across the state have perfect fishing for kids.
