W.Va. lawmakers to vote on new, $11.6B budget
March 16, 2012 10:40 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
West Virginia lawmakers are reviewing an $11.6 billion state spending plan for the upcoming budget year.

The Senate and House of Delegates expect to vote Friday on a budget bill for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Public schools would get at least $2 billion of the proposed amount.

Increasing costs for Medicaid are among the issues reflected in the spending plan. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin proposed an additional $132 million for this health care program. Tomblin wants some of that money reserved for the 2014 budget year.

General tax revenues would cover around $4.2 billion of the budget bill's overall spending. That amount includes surplus funds.

But Friday's proposal would spend nearly $347 million less than what's been budgeted for the current year.
