Legislature signs off on hunting classes in schools
March 08, 2008 9:45 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
West Virginia schools will be able to offer hunting education classes, but the courses won't be mandatory.

The original legislative proposal would have required the 10-hour course, but the House of Delegates changed it to leave that decision to county superintendents and school principals.

Senators accepted the change today and sent the bill to Governor Manchin. The National Conference of State Legislatures says it's not aware of any other state to consider such legislation.

The bill says students in grades 6 through 12 can take courses in safety skills, wilderness training and basic instruction in firearms, although loaded weapons will not be used.

Supporters say the measure is a way to get young people interested in hunting but critics argue that school time would be better spent on other subjects.

The measure is hoped to help stem the drop in licensed hunters. According to the Division of Natural Resources, the number of hunting permits sold in 2006 was 17 percent lower than 1997.
