Unions join fight to protect W.Va. gay, lesbians
February 08, 2012 11:35 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
Efforts to protect gay and lesbian West Virginians from housing and workplace discrimination have gained two new champions.

Both the United Mine Workers of America and the AFL-CIO have endorsed bills that would amend the state's Human Rights Act and Fair Housing Act to make it illegal to discriminate against workers, home owners or renters based on sexual orientation or gender identification.

West Virginia AFL-CIO president Kenneth Perdue says the union supports all workers and aims to end workplace discrimination.

The union represents 70,000 workers in the state. Perdue says some union members have been discriminated against because of their sexual orientation.

A similar bill introduced last year faltered in the House of Delegates. The Senate has previously supported adding the protections to state law.
