Lawmakers pass teacher pay raise bill
March 08, 2008 10:56 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
West Virginia lawmakers have passed $1,600 raises for teachers.

The across-the-board increase replaces Manchin's 3 percent raise proposal. The bill, which was amended by the Senate, also includes $700 hikes for school service personnel and extra money for principals.

Manchin says he supports the amended bill.

When the session started, teachers groups said a $1,600 raise would barely keep up with inflation. They proposed increases of at least $5,000.

Other pay raises approved during the session benefit troopers, state workers and legislators themselves.
