Elevator safety bill advances
March 06, 2008 5:53 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
Anyone who installs, maintains or repairs elevators in West Virginia could soon need a state license if the Senate approves legislation endorsed by its Committee on Government Organization.

The House has already passed the bill, which would give the state Division of Labor oversight of such workers.

A legislative audit recommended the measure, citing similar laws in 25 other states.

The Senate committee advanced the bill Thursday, but after an industry executive urged its rejection.

Kent Lloyd of Abell Elevator International Inc. called the bill a ploy to increase union ranks in his industry.

But another nonunion contractor, Bob Gilchrist, said the measure is needed. Gilchrist said current law is insufficient for protecting public safety.
