W.Va. license plate bill heads to Manchin

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
The West Virginia Legislature wants some help in determining which groups get their own specialty license plates.



The Senate unanimously passed a measure Friday that would give the Division of Motor Vehicles the authority to issue specialty plates in some cases.

The commissioner would handle requests from nonprofit groups when their main purpose is not to promote a specific political, religious or social belief. Advertisements are also banned, and at least 250 people would have to agree to purchase the plates.

The Legislature would still have final say over other requests. West Virginia currently offers about 110 specialty plates.

The bill now goes to Gov. Joe Manchin.
