from Eyewitness News Online W.Va. insurer: not limiting autism care providers February 03, 2012 1:23 PM
CHARLESTON, W.Va. West Virginia's largest private insurer is enlisting health care professionals to provide autism-related treatment. That insurer is Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia. President Fred Earley says an error may have spurred concerns that it would cover applied behavioral analysis only if provided by certain specialists. Earley on Friday said erroneous language on a policy form may be to blame. He said Highmark began signing up providers this fall. Earley also said Highmark had been insuring other autism-related services before West Virginia's new law extending coverage to applied behavioral analysis. This therapy is considered crucial for many forms of this neurological disorder. Insurers and advocates for children with autism are at odds over benefit caps included in the 2011 coverage law. The Legislature is reviewing the law this session. |
